I have many old memories of Joyce. She came to live with us as a teenager not long after loosing her mother.
She quickly became a welcome addition to our family with her big smile and her happy disposition. They were good years.
I’m thankful to say I also have a new memory of Joyce. I travelled to Chapleau this past summer and spent an afternoon with her on Patrick’s deck. Her big smile and positive outlook were still there. She will always have a place in my heart.

When I think about Joyce, there are so many memories but mostly it’s her presence that comes into focus for me: her larger-than-life laugh, the way she could see directly into the heart of a matter, her clever sense of humour, her adventurousness. The last time I talked to Joyce we remembered when - in Toronto - a group of us would sit around the table in her apartment highlighting each other’s hair with those old-school rubber cap kits (oh the pain and the hilarity). This was Joyce; everyone was always welcome in her kitchen and she (and Lawrence) was there for me when I needed her, so many years ago. I find peace in thinking of her at home now, with Lawrence.
