Obituary of Roger Joseph Gendron

GENDRON. Roger Joseph – (August 8, 1923 – October 11, 2023) – It is with broken hearts that the family of Roger Gendron announces his peaceful passing at the Lady Dunn Health Centre-Long Term Care in Wawa on Wednesday October 11, 2023 at the age of 100 years plus 2 months and 3 days. He was granted his final wish – to be reunited with his beautiful wife, Eva (nee Allaire) whom he missed so dearly.

Roger is survived by his 8 loving children: Jocelyne (Henry), Mario, Liliane (Ken), Lynda (Wilfred), Conrad (Johanne), Gilles, Carol (Frank) and Nichole (Gary). Devoted grandfather to 14 grandchildren: Andre, Ryan, Derek, Durwin, Sara, Nathalie, Graham, Danielle, Dallas, Fayanne, Shawn, Tyler, Justin and Meghan. Proud great grandfather to 15 great grandchildren: Shane, Samara, Rylee, Cadence, Linkin, Asher, Lucas, Alexander, Arya, Kori, Isaac, Parker, Harper, Haddie and Emersyn. Dear brother to Fernand Gendron and Rejeanne (Gendron) Desbiens. Roger is also survived by his four brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law. Predeceased by his parents, the late George Gendron and the late Marie Fraser as well, he was predeceased by seven sisters and two brothers.

At the age of 20, Roger joined the army in Quebec and started his training. By the time he was supposed to go overseas, the war had ended. He worked many years in the old-fashioned logging business in Quebec. In early May of 1957, he decided to travel to Northern Ontario where his brother Fernand was working in White River. He was hired by the Canadian Pacific Railway where he worked for many years. His wife, Eva and his four oldest children (ages 8 months to 4 years old at the time) followed and arrived from Quebec on May 31st, 1957. They added four more children to the family in the next five years that followed. When Abitibi-Price started building a sawmill in White River, he decided he needed a change. He was hired and continued to work until he retired in 1987.

Roger was truly a family man. He loved his family gatherings, huge at times, especially at Christmas. He loved hearing guitars playing and people singing. If he was having a bad day, music always made him giddy-up and go, tapping his feet and trying to sing along. He also had a great sense of humour and loved to make people laugh. He was a dedicated fan of the Montreal Canadians until his passing. Roger was a lifelong member of the Royal Canadian Legion joining in 1957. He was also very involved with St. Basil’s Catholic Church and was the janitor there for many years. He was a great father, grandfather, great grandfather and a true inspiration. He will be missed dearly by his family and all of the people that had the pleasure of knowing him.

Cremation has taken place at River’s Edge Cremation Centre, Sault Ste. Marie. A Celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

The family would like to send a humongous thank you and thumbs up to all the doctors, nurses and cleaning staff for all the awesome care they gave Roger during his 2.5 year stay at the Long Term Care.

Roger Joseph - (8 août 1923 - 11 octobre 2023) - C'est avec le cœur brisé que la famille de Roger Gendron annonce son décès paisible au Centre de santé Lady Dunn - Soins de longue durée à Wawa, le mercredi 11 octobre 2023, à l'âge de 100 ans plus 2 mois et 3 jours. Son dernier souhait a été exaucé : retrouver sa belle épouse, Eva (née Allaire), qui lui manquait tant.

Roger laisse dans le deuil ses 8 enfants : Jocelyne (Henry), Mario, Liliane (Ken), Lynda (Wilfred), Conrad (Johanne), Gilles, Carol (Frank) et Nichole (Gary). Grand-père dévoué de 14 petits-enfants : André, Ryan, Derek, Durwin, Sara, Nathalie, Graham, Danielle, Dallas, Fayanne, Shawn, Tyler, Justin et Meghan. Fier arrière-grand-père de 15 arrière-petits-enfants : Shane, Samara, Rylee, Cadence, Linkin, Asher, Lucas, Alexander, Arya, Kori, Isaac, Parker, Harper, Haddie et Emersyn. Il était le frère de Fernand Gendron et de Réjeanne (Gendron) Desbiens. Roger laisse également dans le deuil ses quatre beaux-frères et ses cinq belles-sœurs. Ses parents, feu George Gendron et feu Marie Fraser, ainsi que sept sœurs et deux frères l'ont précédé dans la tombe.

À l'âge de 20 ans, Roger s'est engagé dans l'armée au Québec et a commencé son entraînement. Au moment où il était censé partir outre-mer, la guerre avait pris fin. Il a travaillé de nombreuses années dans l’exploitation forestière au Québec. Au début du mois de mai 1957, il décide de se rendre dans le nord de l'Ontario où son frère Fernand travaille à White River. Il a été embauché par le Chemin de fer Canadien Pacifique, où il a travaillé pendant de nombreuses années. Sa femme, Eva, et ses quatre enfants les plus âgés (de 8 mois à 4 ans à l'époque) le suivent et arrivent du Québec le 31 mai 1957. Quatre autres enfants sont venus s'ajouter à la famille au cours des cinq années qui ont suivi. Lorsque Abitibi-Price a commencé à construire une scierie à White River, il a décidé qu'il avait besoin d'un changement. Il a été embauché et a continué à travailler jusqu'à sa retraite en 1987.

Roger était un véritable père de famille. Il adorait les réunions de famille, parfois énormes, surtout à Noël. Il aimait entendre les guitares et les gens chanter. S'il passait une mauvaise journée, la musique lui redonnait toujours de l’entrain, il tapait du pied et essayait de chanter. Il avait également un grand sens de l'humour et aimait faire rire les gens. Jusqu'à sa mort, il était un fervent partisan des Canadiens de Montréal. Roger a été membre à vie de la Légion royale canadienne, à laquelle il s'est joint en 1957. Il était également très impliqué dans l'église catholique St. Basil's, dont il a été le concierge pendant de nombreuses années. Il était un père, un grand-père et un arrière-grand-père formidable et une véritable source d'inspiration. Il manquera beaucoup à sa famille et à tous ceux qui ont eu le plaisir de le connaître.

La crémation a eu lieu au River's Edge Cremation Centre, à Sault Ste. Marie. Une célébration de sa vie aura lieu à une date ultérieure.

La famille aimerait remercier chaleureusement tous les médecins, les infirmières et le personnel d'entretien pour les soins extraordinaires qu'ils ont prodigués à Roger pendant son séjour de deux ans et demi au centre de soins de longue durée.
