Please share a memory of Elodie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
BERTIN, Elodie Marie – (November 15, 1931 – November 13, 2021) Mrs. Elodie Bertin passed away unexpectedly on Saturday November 13th, just two days shy of her 90th birthday. As much as she was enjoying receiving so many wonderful birthday cards and kind words from friends and family, unfortunately God had other plans for her, which did not include cake, candles and camaraderie with her nearest and dearest on her special day. Elodie was born in Acadieville, NB, where she grew up as a middle child in a family of 10. Sadly, her mother passed away when she was only 9 years old, so Elodie and her brothers and sisters learned some hard lessons at a tender young age. The challenges of growing up in a large family in the 1930’s definitely had an influence on the strong, independent woman Elodie was to become. She was an excellent cook and was widely regarded for her homemade bread & buns. Another family favorite were her delicious meat pies – a Christmas staple for 3 generations. No slouch with a sewing machine either, she was our resident seamstress, a talent that will be sorely missed. Coming from a large family as she did, it was not surprising that Elodie would single out the love of her life from another family of 10 siblings. A strong, handsome young man named Raymond caught her eye, and eventually they made their way to Marathon, where they got married November 15th, 1952 and began building their lives together. They were blessed with two children, a son James and then a daughter Charlene. Elodie (or “Nanny” as she became affectionately known to her grandchildren) and Raymond enjoyed many years of camping, fishing, travelling and of course, visiting friends and family. She was pleased to give back to her community through volunteering, especially for the Catholic Women’s League and at the Nevada Booth in the D.H. Foods Mall. Nanny enjoyed playing cards and was thrilled on Saturday nights when her Skip-Bo gang came over. It was definitely the highlight of her week the past several years. Elodie was predeceased by her husband Raymond, who left us in 1999, and many other family members on both sides. Left to mourn are son James, daughter Charlene (Walter) and grandsons Michael (Sarah) and Justin (Stephanie). Friends are invited to a visitation at Holy Saviour Church on Wednesday November 17, 2021 from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be follow on Thursday, November 18th at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Saviour Catholic Church with Reverend Jerome Nnanna officiating. (Due to Covid 19, face masks/coverings will be mandatory inside the church. Attendance will be limited, please be patient if you are required to wait to enter the church). Interment will take place at the Marathon Public Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Elodie’s memory to Wilson Memorial General Hospital or a charity of your choice. (Arrangements entrusted to the Kerry Funeral Home, Wawa, 1-800-439-4937). www.kerryfuneralhome.ca
